Biomedical editing and copywriting
I have over 8 years experience as a biomedical editor covering a number of topics that include veterinary sciences, environmental sciences, pharmacological sciences, food sciences, and analytical chemistry. I also provide a copywriting and ghost writing service for a number of other industries. I have a vast number of positive feedback comments but the work I have done remains confidential on request of the clients. My website is under construction and I will submit it to EASE when it is finalized. My background is in biomedical sciences and pharmacology and many of my clients are non English speakers submitting to mostly Elsevier journals. I always work with clients to the point of perfection where the client is happy and the submission to the journal is accepted without criticism.

Programme
Day 1
Morning
Session 1: The world of publishing, journals and editors
This first session will put the entire workshop into context. With a mixture of lecture, demonstration and discussion we will consider what has been changing in the world of journals, and what changes we can anticipate. This will inform our later discussions. Topics to be considered will include:
- Global research and publishing
- The journal landscape – big and small journals
- The roles and responsibilities of editors
- Technologies, innovation and e-publishing
Timing:
Start at 9.30am
Break for tea/coffee at 10.30
Stop for lunch at 12.30
Afternoon
Session 2: Publishing for readers
This session will consider the often ignored community of readers. How do editors ensure that their journal is read, that the research is understood and reaches the target audiences, and how can they ensure that their articles are being cited. This session will consider who editors should be thinking of when they accept articles and commission new content, and how they can increase readership and citation. Topics to be considered will include:
- How to influence understanding and increase citation through presentation
- Choosing the ‘right’ balance of content
Timing:
Start at 1.30pm
Break for tea/coffee at 3pm
Finish at 4.30pm
Day 2
Morning
Session 3: Quality control – publishing the best content
We start this day by thinking of how to improve the quality of what we publish. How can editors ensure that authors actually want to submit articles to them, and will promote the journal to their peers in their own institutions? Editors have responsibilities towards authors and we will consider how the relationship works and can be improved. Topics to be discussed will include:
- Working with authors
- Working with peer reviewers
- Ethical standards – authorship, fraud, etc.
- Technical standards – e-publishing, presentation, etc.
Timing:
Start at 9.00am
Break for tea/coffee at 10.30
Stop for lunch at 12.00
Afternoon
Session 4:Raising visibility
Finally we will consider how journals can promote themselves and increase their visibility within their communities. It is important that journal editors pay attention to this area and do not assume “it is someone else’s problem”. Topics to be discussed include:
- Tools and strategies for promoting journals
Timing:
Start at 1pm
Finish the course at 3pm
